Young was 20 years old when he was accidentally killed on 13th May 1945, near Sandilong Avenue and Fourteenth Street in Mildura.

Young was flying in Wirraway A20-650 when he was involved in a mid-air collision with Wirraway A20-175 piloted by Sergeant J.G.T. Read. Sergeant Read returned to base in A20-175 despite some wing damage.
