Ryan was only 20 years old when he was involved in a triple fatality when two Wirraways collided at 7000 feet over Koorlong 21 January 1943. He was flying a Wirraway A20-277, his instructor flight Lieutenant Menzies baled out. The other fatalities were Pilot officer Geoff Taaffe and Sergeant Alan Bates.
