Overmyer enlisted in RAAF Groundcrew in Sydney on the 23rd of July 1940. He was based at Canberra RAAF Station.

Remustering to Aircrew and graduating as a pilot, Sergeant Overmyer was posted to 2OTU at Mildura. He lost his life when his Kittyhawk A29-173 collided with A29-181 while formation flying in cloud, stalled and crashed 1/2 mile from the aerodrome. The other pilot, Sergeant R. Munro, survived.
