Tanser enlisted in the RAAF Aircrew 24th May 1941 in Sydney.
He trained at Bradfield Park and Narromine and won his wings at 1 SFTS, Camp Borden, Canada. Posted to the U.K. Sgt. Tanser completed advanced flying at Calverley and 2OTU on Spitfires at Aston Downs 20th September 1942.
After Japan entered the war Tanser was sent back to Australia, disembarking at Melbourne on the 16th of December 1941. He was then posted to Mildura for operational training at 20TU. Sadly Sgt Tanser was flying Spitfire A58-87 shadow shooting over Lake Victoria 19th January 1943 when his aircraft crashed into the lake. His body was recovered from the lake three days later, and he was buried in the Mildura cemetery.
