Anwyl was originally from Woodville, SA and enlisted in RAAF Aircrew on the 19th of June 1943.
He trained on a single-engine aircraft and was posted to 2OTU for operational training soon after graduation as a sergeant pilot. On the 3rd of July 1944, Anwyl took off in a Wirraway A-20 in a section combat exercise with two other aircraft. Attempting to press home an attack, he collided with the Wirraway flown by sergeant Stan Johnston over Fletchers Lake, Coomealla, and crashed 14 miles NW of the Aerodrome. Sergeant Anwyl was killed in the accident but Sergeant Johnstone parachuted to safety.
