F/O Norman Powell was born in Tighes Hill NSW on November 27, 1924 and enlisted in the RAAF as Aircrew 1 at 2RC Sydney on January 23, 1943 and after his EFTS and SFTS training was posted to 2OTU.

F/O Powell aged 19 was partaking in No. 34 Fighter Operational Conversion Course onto Kittyhawks, flying Kittyhawk A29-147 when he needed to attempt a forced landing at the aerodrome; F/O Powell tried to go round again but stalled from 100 feet, crashed and the aircraft burnt completely.
