P/O Neville Murphy (429986) was born in Unley SA on June 9, 1924 and enlisted in the RAAF on October 10, 1942 and after his EFTS and SFTS training arrived at Mildura 2OTU on August 8, 1943.
On September 23, 1943 P/O Murphy was aboard Kittyhawk A29-60 engaging in an exercise as a part of No.23 Fighter Operational Conversion Course onto Kittyhawks. The exercise was Ground Straffing at the Air to Ground Gunnery Range at Gol Gol near Mildura. On his second attack run, the evasive action of Jinking and Weaving was being practiced, the Jinking and Weaving continued passing the target when in a left skid the nose and port wing dropped that caused the Kittyhawk to hit the ground disintegrating and catching fire fatally injuring P/O Murphy.
P/O N.D. Murphy aged 19 was buried in the Mildura War Cemetery on September 26, 1943 with full RAAF Honours with both his parents attending the service.
